So I have decided to try this blogging thing again :*) I am organizing ideas and DIY tutorials so I wont be sitting in front of the computer drawing a blank and getting frustrated. Excited to start it up again!
I have to say I have the best friends a girl could ask for. This amazing cake was my surprise birthday cake. Being the pinterest addict I am it was perfect! A big thank you to all my fab friends and to Wendy for this great cake!
I had to share a pic of the advent calendar I made last night for my son. It was really easy to do! I used wrapping paper to make the numbers and Mod Podge to stick them on the pre cut board. I covered the top of clothes pins and wrapped Lego pieces and a Hershey kiss in each little package. I got lucky and the Lego helicopter had 23 steps and a Lego guy so every day we do a step and by Christmas we will have a new Lego helicopter! My son is ecstatic. And I am so excited that my idea actually worked out!
One of the things I enjoy the most is styling a photo shoot. There is something about bringing all the elements together and making everything match that speaks to my childhood dream of being a fashion designer. I not only love making my family match in every shoot we do but making a group of girls match for my store was a great thrill. I have to admit I am addicted to professional photography and I am very lucky to call a few professional photographers my friends. LA Krasner photography has come through for me on numerous occasions and this shoot was no different.
I set out for the shoot to have a very boutique feel to it and I wanted all the elements to be hand made. I special ordered the leg warmers from Kangacoo Designs and I made the tutus, head bands, mini top hats and ribbon tree shirts. I won’t be selling the shirts but you can find the tutus here. Instead I thought it would make for a great tutorial! They were super easy to make and took very little time. Here’s how I did it:
Materials:
Green gross grain ribbon 3/8″ or 5/8″
Christmas ribbon of your choice 3/8″
Brown gross grain ribbon 5/8″
sewing machine
pins
white shirt or onesie
lighter to heat seal the ends of the ribbon
Directions:
Step1:
Heat seal one end of the ribbon. You will cut and heat seal the other end later. Pin the top in the middle top of the front of the shirt and begin the zig zag.
Step 2:
Continue to zig zag and pin 4-5 times keeping them as even as possible and increasing in size.
Step 3:
Cut the ribbon and heat seal the end. Then tuck the end under so that it will be in your sewing path and pin.
Step 4:
Cut 1″ of brown ribbon and heat seal. tuck under bottom of tree and pin.
Step 5:
Sew down the middle. again try to keep it straight. I used brown thread so it would look like the trunk but you could use white or green depending on your preference.
This is what it will look like after sewn.
Step 6:
Tie a bow with your Christmas ribbon (heat seal ends) and attach to the top of your tree.
I used the button setting on my sewing machine and the presser foot that goes with that setting. You can stitch with a regular setting or hand sew the bow on if your machine does not have a button setting.
And your finished!
3/8″ ribbon
5/8″ Ribbon
Here are some pics from the photo shoot!

Please leave a comment if you have any questions. Happy crafting :*) and Merry Christmas!!!

Market Mommy Launches Annual Holiday Gift Guide
Small, Mom-Owned Businesses Highlight their Products to Increase Holiday Sales
For the third year in a row, Market Mommy has published an online holiday gift guide to highlight gifts that are available for purchase from small, mom-owned companies. The gift guide is just one way in which Market Mommy fulfills its mission of helping mom entrepreneurs market themselves on a budget.
“Our gift guide serves two purposes,” said Dawn Berryman, founder of Market Mommy. “It allows small, mom-owned businesses to advertise at an affordable cost and it makes it easy for others to shop and support these mom entrepreneurs.”
Berryman feels it is important to the economy to help small business owners. “When you buy from small, family-owned companies you are directly helping that family, rather than padding the pockets of large corporations and CEOs,” she said.
The gift guide will online for three full months, beginning today through January 31, 2012. It contains seven categories of gifts ideas, including: For Baby, For Kids, For Her, For Home, Gourmet Gifts, Holiday Cards and Stocking Stuffers.
“The variety and caliber of products that we have featured in this year’s guide is really exciting,” said Berryman. Featured products include handmade items, jewelry, personalized gifts and much more. “Our guide is a great place to shop for everyone on your list.”
Sponsors for the 2011 Market Mommy Holiday Gift include; The Boy’s Store, Candles for Christ, Dittany Baby, Micah & Co., Old Town Imports, Prepared Housewives, Print Art Kids, Rock Paper Scissors Invitations, Scratch Me Not and Tickle Me Too.

There is nothing I love more than good friends and comfort food. I have never really loved fall; I am more of a spring/summer girl and fall to me was always the sign of cold, which I despise. As I have gotten older I have begun to love fall more and more. The food, the fashion, and the beginning of the holiday season, a crafters busiest time of the year. Fall is definitely moving up on the favorite seasons list.
When I was a little girl I used to dream of grand dinner parties like in the movies. Well this wasn’t quite that grand but I think I did a pretty good job. Two months of researching and planning, and two days of cooking later I had a great time with a couple good friends. I am not a great cook but I am definitely moving in the direction of being a good cook. The more I practice the better I get and I have to say I am really starting to enjoy cooking. I used to only love baking, sweets were my thing. Since I have become a mom and care more about what goes into my kids bodies than I care about my own I have really made an effort to cook more. Plus taking 2 kids out to dinner is not as relaxing as sitting in our own home. So you might be seeing more recipe reviews on the blog :*)
As with most things life threw me a curve ball, my hubby had to work. Not just the day of the party but the day before that too. I managed to take care of all of my kids needs both days while cooking and cleaning. Really I don’t know how I did it but I proved to myself that I really can have and do it all. Maybe there really is enough hours in the day… maybe.
Here is the menu, recipes and decor for my 4 course, welcome fall, dinner party.
MENU
Cowboy Caviar
Vertical Pear Salad
Individual Pot Pies
Pumpkin Spice Cupcake with Creamcheese Frosting in a jar
DECOR:
Recipes:
Cowboy Caviar:
1 15oz can white beans, drained and rinsed
1 15oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 11oz can Green Giant White Shoepeg Corn, drained and rinsed
1 4oz can diced green chilies, drained
1 (2 1/4oz) can sliced black olives, drained
3 diced fresh roma tomatoes
1 small onion , diced
2 diced avocados
1/4 cup Italian salad dressing
Mix all together except avocado in a large bowl and refrigerate. Add avocado just before serving. Makes 6 1/2 cups.
Vertical Pear Salad: Original recipe HERE
4 smooth skinned pears
2-3 cups watercress
1/2 cup toasted pecans (place pecans on a baking sheet in the oven for 3-5 min at 350 degrees. Watch carefully as they scorch easily)
1/4 cup crumbled blue cheese
Pear Vinaigrette dressing
Honey for drizzling (optional, I did not add honey)
Lemon juice
Cut pears horizontally into 3 or 4 slices depending on the size of your pears. Use a paring knife or apple corer to cut out the cores. The pieces should look like O’s. Leave the stem on the top piece. Brush slices of pear with lemon juice to keep it from browning.
Toss watercress, pecans, and blue cheese with dressing until coated.
Reassemble the pear, vertically, with the watercress salad in between each slice. Once assembled, drizzle with honey and serve.
Note: the pears stand up better on a teacup plate because the circle indent in the plate helps keep the pear in one place.
Individual Pot Pies
A Steph and Becca collaboration :*)
yields 6 10 oz ramekins I got from target HERE
4 cups Chicken Stalk (not broth)
2 1/3 cups cubed red potatoes
1 1/2 cups sliced carrots
1 Tbsp butter
3/4 cup pearl onions
1 clove garlic minced
1/2 cup flour
1 cup frozen peas
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp dried thyme leaves
few shakes of pepper
2 cups diced cooked chicken (I buy a rotisary chicken and cut it up. so much easier, less time-consuming and adds more flavor)
Pre-heat oven to 400
Boil 3 cups chicken stalk, add potatoes and carrots and cook for about 10 min. Drain in colander over a bowl and save liquid. Mix remaining 1 cup of stalk with flour and whisk in measuring cup and set aside. Melt butter in large skillet, add onion and garlic and cook until onions are a little tender. Lower heat to med-low add saved stalk and then add stalk and flour mixture and stir. Then add potatoes, carrots, peas, thyme, salt and pepper and stir. Cook until liquid thickens. Turn heat off and stir in chicken. Cool slightly and scoop into ramekins and top with pastry. Cook at 400 degrees for 40 min or until pastry is golden brown
*A big thank you to my best friend Steph for giving me the basics of this recipe. I don’t think I will ever want to eat a frozen pot pie again.
For Pastry: Original recipe from Barefoot Contessa HERE
For the pastry, mix the flour, salt, and baking powder in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Add the shortening and butter and mix quickly with your fingers until each piece is coated with flour. Pulse 10 times, or until the fat is the size of peas. With the motor running, add the ice water; process only enough to moisten the dough and have it just come together. Dump the dough out onto a floured board and knead quickly into a ball. Wrap the dough in plastic and allow it to rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Divide the dough and roll each piece into a circle. Brush the outside edges of each bowl with the egg wash, then place the dough on top. Trim the circle to 1/2-inch larger than the top of the bowl. Crimp the dough to fold over the side, pressing it to make it stick. Brush the dough with egg wash and make 3 slits in the top.
Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes in a Jar: Original cake recipe HERE
1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/4 cups (270 grams) light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 cup (240 ml) fresh or canned pure pumpkin (about 1/2 of a 15 ounce can)
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 cups (200 grams) sifted cake flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon (5 grams) baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup (120 ml) buttermilk, room temperature
Note: To make your own buttermilk combine 1/2 cup (120 ml) of milk with 1/2 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice. Stir and let stand for 10 minutes before using.
Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) and place rack in center of oven. Butter and flour (or spray with Baker’s Joy) two – 8 inch (20 cm) cake pans.
Cake: In the bowl of your electric mixer (or with a hand mixer), beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes). Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add the pumpkin puree and vanilla extract and beat until incorporated.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and spices. Add the flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to the pumpkin batter, in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Devide batter into 10-12 mason jars (I only did 8 and there was too much cake and not enough room for the frosting) Bake at 350 for 20-30 min or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting
Cream Cheese Frosting: Original recipe HERE
I’m not going to do a full tutorial for these because there are really great instructions already out there. All I did for the pompadours was combine two tutorials. One from House of Smith (love her!) and from Filth Wizardry. My original inspiration for my painting the roses red centerpieces came from House of Smith. I stumbled upon her rose ball tutorial and immediately knew they would look amazing as decorations. I couldn’t quite figure out how to make the roses look like hers so I went looking for another tutorial and found Filth Wizardry.
The only thing I changed in the construction of the flowers was the length of the crepe paper (30″) and I added glue at the end so I could cut the stems off and glue them to the styrofoam ball without the flower unraveling. I used a glue stick instead of hot glue because I really don’t like burning my fingers. I then used a hot glue gun on the low setting to glue the flowers on the styrofoam. I found that this didn’t melt the styrofoam as much but you have to hold the flower there a little longer so it doesn’t move while it’s drying. This is really like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. Some flowers fit better together than others and you have to get them as close as possible without crowding them so there isn’t any gaps. I followed House of Smiths instructions for this part. To make the red and white “candy cane” roses all I did was put a red and a white strip back to back and folded the exact same way as the others. It just produces a little thicker flower.
Another thing to consider is that these take forever! I admit I can have a very short attention span when it comes to crafting and I like instant gratification but these seriously took forever. I was going to make 6 and hang some from the ceiling and I only ended up making 3 and totally redoing the look and I started 6 months before the party. I felt like I was constantly making flowers and I had so many other things to make so I scrapped the original plan and I am very happy with how they came out.
I already had the hurricanes so I added some cheap paint brushes, some ribbon and the characters to them to complete the centerpieces.
Because I spent so much time and effort making these I am really glad they are red and white. I plan to use them for Christmas and Valentines Day decor. I will of course post pictures when I do.
Thanks for stopping by :*)
Ahhh another Pinterest inspired project. I fell in love with this picture of pink lemonade in jars with a straw for many reasons. First they are virtually spill proof, perfect for a kids party, and second I could easily style them for the Alice in Wonderland party. Plus they were just to stinkin cute. Unfortunately they were also too expensive for my taste at $36.00 for 12. If you don’t have the time, patients or a drill you can purchase them here. But if you are a DIY fanatic like me below is how I made them for a fraction of the price.
I paid .64 cents per jar at Specialty Bottle (I bought 24 6oz jars) and purchased the flamingo straws from Oriental Trading for $2.50 per dozen ( I bought 3 dozen). I also have some knowledge with Photoshop so I made the drink me tags for free to match the other printables I purchased from TomKat Studio. She has “drink me” tags you can purchase here. Total I spent $22.86 plus shipping.
For this project I had to enlist my hubby to do some work for me. He drilled a hole in the top of each jar lid and filed any pieces poking out. Then I added a bow to the “drink me” tags and hot glued them to the front of the jars. On the day of the party we added ice, a lemon slice, and lemonade. This turned out super cute and a fun way to have drinks at the party. And we had no spilled lemonade. :*)
This could be altered for any party just by changing what is added to them. A couple of ideas I have for using them in the future:
Halloween~ Ghost, Frankenstein and Pumpkin tags with black and orange striped straws
Christmas~ Just some red and green ribbon tied around the top for a simple look and some red and green straws.
Really the possibilities are endless!
To complete the look I chose to go with the royal court theme for the drink table. My decorations included rose pompadour centerpieces with a card painting the roses red and a screaming red queen. I will have a separate post for the pompadours soon and I made the card and queen with my Cricut. I purchased the Alice in wonderland fabric from JapanLovelyCrafts on Etsy. I think this was my favorite part of the party and the decorations I am most proud of. I had so much fun with it!
I have discovered that party planning is a crafters dream. I’m the kind of crafter that get’s bord easily and needs to be doing new things, I can’t stand making the same thing in the same color over and over. I have fallen in love with party planning for this reason. There are a lot of elements and different things to plan and prepare. My daughter’s first birthday is really the first time I have searched out inspiration and really went with a theme and hand-made decorations. Usually I just make a cake and buy some theme plates and store-bought food and call it good. My friend Annie turned me on to The Party Dress and it was all over from there. She is also the culprit that introduced me to Pinterest, my new addiction. Thanks for all the inspiration Annie!
I have to say this was also the first time I have been on task and totally prepared. I was not stressed like I have been in the past and I did almost everything I had planned to do. Like most things in life I was thrown a curve ball and had to have surgery 4 days before the party. I had everything I could possibly have done the day before I went in but I had to call in reinforcements. The lesson I learned is to use the resources that you have even if you didn’t just have surgery. It made the party more enjoyable that I didn’t have to do absolutely everything. I get so caught up in doing it my self sometimes that I forget I have some really great resources. A big thank you to Leigh Ann Krasner Photography, Cakes by Wendy, and Auntie Steph for all of your help, I love all of you dearly. I will go more into detail about each element soon but for now here are all the pics! I hope they inspire you as much as some of the pictures I found inspired me.
